"Some people need a reason to hate in order to live. It's easy to despise someone you think has it better than you. Or who has more than you, especially when you think they don't deserve it and you do. But at the end of the day, life sucks for us all. You do what you have to to get through it."

Darling Cruel was next in line to rule the Caronese Empire. According to Caronese law, however, at age 28 he's still considered a minor and not old enough to rule. Since his father's death over 12 years ago he's had to relinquish power to his guardian/uncle, Arturo Cruel. While his father ruled with a heavy hand yet gentle heart, his uncle Arturo has ruled with a cruel, deadly, and corrupt hand.

Over the years Darling has faced abuse at the hands of his uncle and done what he could to shield his brother and sister from it by keeping them as far away from harms way whenever possible. When his mother took a lover, something that Caronese dictated she must never do, he protected her the only way he could when one of her lovers was found fleeing the palace grounds in a way that left no question as to what he'd been doing. Darling claimed the man was his lover, thereby saving his mother from certain death sentence. Saving his mother, however, came at a high price for himself, it cost him the respect and loyalty of the Caronese people and at the ripe old age of 15 he was disgraced and ridiculed. While he lived with the decision he made that day he became the butt of many a seedy joke.

After 13 years of being subservient, however, Darling devised a plan to seize control of his empire from Arturo. Just hours before the plan was to be implemented, however, he was taken prisoner by the very men he's fought side by side with and risked his own life for as his alter ego Kere, one of the leaders of the Sentella. Unfortunately, over the years the loathing and disrespect his people had for him had turned into something much more sinister culminating in him becoming a target of a hate crime so cruel and inhumane that it would break a lesser man and send him to his grave.

After all that's happened and all he's been through the question is will he be able to put the past behind him and be the leader he was born to be, or will his need for vengeance overpower him and destroy them all?
_______________

They say that the events in our lives can change us, transform us. They can shape us into the people we will become and change us from the person we might have been. Sometimes they can make us stronger for living through them, but other times they can destroy us. We are the ones who will ultimately decide if we'll let the bad break our spirit or if we overcome what we've been subjected to. When hate and cruelty are involved the latter is not an easy thing to do. Sometimes we can't do it on our own. Sometimes we need a little help.

Darling Cruel is a man of many faces. He's been part of the Sentella since it was created. The Sentella is an organization bent on making sure The League and other governing bodies in the United Systems don't abuse their power. He's been a part of the organization for years, secretly helping to fight against cruelty like that his uncle has inflicted on the Caronese people. No one knows the true identity of Kere. Not even Zarya, his girlfriend of 3 years. For to expose himself to anyone would put those he loves most in danger.

Darling is a strong, caring, natural born leader, but he's also vulnerable. He knows what hate is because he's experienced and suffered from it first hand. What makes this love story so unique and complicated is that by a cruel twist of fate, the pain and suffering inflicted on him most recently was done at the hands of the people that Zarya, the woman he loves and leader of the Resistance, was in charge of. He thought he knew the people she commanded, he thought he knew Zarya, but if she allowed him or really anyone to be mistreated like he was, was she really the person he thought she was? He wasn't sure if he could overcome the betrayal he felt by the woman he loved and had one day hoped to marry.

This is a tale of hate, revenge, forgiveness, healing, and most importantly love. A roller coaster of a ride that only someone as talented as Ms. Kenyon could pull off. If you're looking for a tortured male hero romance, this is the book for you. I think this is the best book of the series so far. It earned a 5 out of 5 roses from me. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. A truly wonderful love story and a touching and heart wrenching tale. If you've haven't read any of The League books thus far, this is the book that should make you want to read it. I truly LOVED it.
