Fate has not been kind to Lady Calista Holland, née Calista Chance. For nearly six years she's been entrapped in her own personal hell with the only ray of light being the son her dreadful marriage had created. Now she's had to send him away for his own protection. Stuck at an inn due to inclement weather, she desperately needs to get back to her home or the punishment her husband will inflict upon her will be unbearable. To make matters worse, the man who courted her nearly six years ago, the man who could have saved her from this horrible life, is residing at the same establishment. Who says fate doesn't have a wicked sense of humor?

Just when Callista thought fate could be no crueler, it reared its ugly head once more as if to mock her...

"You say you are reliving the same day?" he said as he peered into her ears with a pointed tool. "Every day?"

"Yes," She swiveled to face him. "Have you ever heard of such a thing before?"

"I have not, unfortunately."

What happens when a proper English Lady relives the same day over and over with no one but herself remembering what happened the same day before? Why mayhem, madness, and humorously unladylike behavior, of course.
This book was obviously inspired by the movie 'Groundhog Day' where a person is stuck reliving the same day until they get it right. In this rendition, its a well behaved English Lady who is stuck trying to figure out why she can't seem to reach tomorrow. Callista's not a bad person, she acted the way society dictates, and she's done everything that's expected of her. So why can't she break the vicious cycle? That's something she'll have to discover on her own.

It was fun watching Callista lose her wits as the alternate title of "Lady Gone Wild" came to mind. I loved seeing her grow as an individual while we learned what exactly happened to her six years ago. Likewise, Tacitus Ceasar Everard, the ninth Marquess of Dare, was fun to watch as he interacted with Callista. She has a way of undoing him as she never seems to do what he expects, thereby keeping him on his toes.

Overall, I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. It was a lighthearted, fun, and sexy romp that had a happy ending. It is also the second book in the Twist series, but it can be read as a standalone. I haven't yet read the first book., but I didn't feel lost at all. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating - too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.

Giveaway, Excerpt, & Review of The Spinster's Guide to Scandalous Behavior (Seduction Diaries #2) by Jennifer McQuiston

The Spinster's Guide to Scandalous Behavior
(Seduction Diaries #2)
by Jennifer McQuiston

~ Official Blurb ~

When her eccentric aunt suddenly dies and bequeaths her the key to a falling-down cottage in Cornwall, Lucy Westmore is surprised. After all, she scarcely knows her aunt, and her memories of Heathmore are murky, at best. But even more surprising is the part of Lucy’s inheritance that doesn’t come with a key: an old leather journal that provides the details of her mysterious aunt’s life and-for better or worse-gives Lucy all the instructions she needs to live the life of a scandalous spinster.

Lord Thomas Branston has spent the last five years in Cornwall, hiding from his painful past. Nothing has been tempting enough to lure him back to London…until now. He alone knows the real value of the property, and he’s determined to buy Heathmore before Miss Westmore ruins everything and sells it off to the highest bidder.

Emboldened by the guidance in her aunt’s diary, Lucy refuses to sell the property, not even when Lord Branston’s offers escalate, or when the house turns out to be truly uninhabitable. Lucy has no intention of giving up her one chance for independence. And Thomas has no intention of abandoning his suit.

But is it the property or the spitfire of a spinster that’s got his heart all tied up? And what is he willing to offer for both?

~ Excerpt #1 ~

Lydia’s gaze scooted lower, and her widened. “Why are you wearing Geoffrey’s old hat and jacket?” Her voice inched louder. “What on earth is going on?”

Lucy shrugged out of the borrowed garment. “I went … out.”

Her sister gaped at her. “Do you mean you went outside? Dressed like that?”

“You’ve seen me in trousers before.”

“Yes. Trousers to work in the greenhouse, which is scandalous enough,” Lydia choked out. “But to go out, where someone could see you … You look like a—”

“Boy?” Lucy finished. She removed the hat, and several pieces of her newly cut hair swung forward to just barely graze her chin. “’Tis rather the point. Better to be thought a boy, I think, when one traipses unchaperoned through the streets of London.” She smiled cheekily. “I need to guard my reputation, you know.”

Lydia reached out a trembling finger to touch Lucy’s hair. “Oh, Lucy … what terrible, awful thing have you done now?”

Lucy shook her head, testing the feel of it against her neck. Her hair didn’t feel terrible. Neither did it feel awful. “I’ve sold it.” She blew several insistent wisps of hair from her eyes, wondering how to contain them. Now that she’d removed her cap, the shortened strands seemed a bit … excited by their newfound freedom. “In fact, it was your idea.”

“How, exactly, was this my idea?” Lydia sounded close to hysterical.

“You encouraged me to find a way to earn the money to reach Cornwall on my own. You told me to find something to sell, so I visited the wig makers. Did you know they pay more for blond hair?” Though … not much more. She had a total of fifteen shillings in her pocket. By her calculations, if the sum was added to the loose change from her desk drawer, she had enough to get her to Cornwall. Now she just needed to find

'At first glance the package seemed rather innocuous. About ten inches square and wrapped in brown paper, it sat on the butler's silver salver like a  large, plain cousin to the dainty white letters that surrounded it. Its appearance sparked some mild curiosity. but then again, most correspondence did...'

Lucy Westmore's fate seemed sealed until a mysterious package arrived two weeks after her elusive aunt died. The letter included began:

'Dear Lucille,

I know you must be surprised to receive this package, given that by now I am quite dead. But I suspect someone--probably a man--will try to thwart my wishes, and so I have taken this step to ensure my intentions are honored...'

Included in the package. among other items. were the diaries of her aunt E, and a deed to the late woman's estate. While Lucy had only met her aunt once many years ago, she must have recognized a kindred spirit when she saw one. For to Lucy's surprise, many of the thoughts and sentiments expressed by her late aunt were very similar to Lucy's own. Her aunt had knowingly bestowed upon her a tremendous gift. She'd given her the freedom to choose her own destiny. The ability to decide if she wished to marry a peer of the realm or take charge of her own fate. Oh, the things she could and would now do and she had Aunt E's diaries to help guide her...

The Spinster's Guide to Scandalous Behavior
Take one young miss. Add one part defiance, a heap of intelligence, a dash of freedom and let simmer. Slowly add in one handsome young Marquess with a sordid past, a touch of scandal, and a dash of trouble. Stir and Viola! You've got the makings of one deliciously fun story.

This was such a amusing story that I couldn't read it in public. I kept breaking into fits of giggles at the most inopportune times. Yet despite that, the novel managed to hold a good deal of depth which I found to be a lovely combination.

Lucy is a strong willed, intelligent, opinionated young lady who is not looking forward to her first season in London society. It is something she's been dreading for some time. While most ladies of her peerage would be excited and looking forward to finding their future husband, Lucy is not. She sees things as they truly are and knows love matches are a rare occurrence. She wants to be wanted for who she is, not for what she can bring to the union. She doesn't like having to hide her personality and intelligence behind a demure mask, She doesn't want to be another person's property and lose herself in the bargain. Through her aunt's generosity, she's been provided with a means out and in the middle of the night she makes her big escape.

Lord Branston "Thomas" is quite familiar with society's dictates. He inherited his wealth and title of marquess at an early age. He'd also been left in charge of his young sister whom he hadn't done his best to protect. Falling into to ruin, she'd become pregnant and her funeral sent him spiraling down a dark road that seemed to have no end. That is until he encountered a very opinionated old lady with a good heart who set him on the right track. He owes her a great debt and when her very like minded niece comes to town he knows he, or at least his heart, is in trouble.

What made this novel so delicious is that Thomas through knowing Lucy's aunt knows her as well or at least feels like he does. This of course causes some problems because Lucy didn't know her aunt, at least not until she reads her diaries, nor how the two interacted. So the teasing/flirting she receives from Thomas as he falls into an easy rapport with her can at times easily misconstrued which can lead to trouble between the them as Lucy doesn't recognize his particular brand of humor. Plus, Lucy isn't as bold or as worldly as her aunt. At least not yet.

I couldn't help but give this one 5 out of 5 roses. The heat between these two characters was searing and it was fun to watch how Lucy dealt with it all. I absolutely loved Thomas and his reason for wanting to acquire Lady E's property. It's the sort of story that puts you in a good mood with a smile on your lips for a good long time after reading it. I highly recommend this one. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating - too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.

Giveaway and Excerpt; TAKING THE HIGH ROAD – Sarah MacLean THE ROGUE NOT TAKEN Blog Blitz Stop #7

The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean
Coming to book stores near you on 12/29/2015

“The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean is my favorite book of hers to date. If you’ve read her, or know me, then you know that I just said a thing.” ~ Smart Bitches

News Flash:  Announcing a sublime – and scandalously wonderful – new series from New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author Sarah MacLean!
The author aroused immediate interest when she announced this high-concept affair: “I'm thrilled to announce my next project -- the Scandal & Scoundrel series, which I pitched to my editor as ‘Old School TMZ,’" says MacLean.  “It’s modern celebrity gossip with a pre-Victorian twist. Basically, this is my way of convincing my husband that all those glossy magazines in our house are ‘work necessities.’
The first novel in the series, THE ROGUE NOT TAKEN (Avon Books; ISBN 9780062379412; eISBN 9780062379399; on-sale 12/29/15)  is a riff on a certain elevator incident made famous at a Met gala several years ago.  But in MacLean’s imagination, the scurrilous turns absolutely sensational, as a ballroom imbroglio sets off a very heated carriage journey along the Great North Road.  It’s a long way from London to Scotland…you would be quite amazed at how much drama can ensue between a seemingly ill-matched duo on such a wild ride!
~ ABOUT THE BOOK ~
Lady Sophie’s Society Splash
When Sophie, the least interesting of the Talbot sisters, lands her philandering brother-in-law backside-first in a goldfish pond in front of all society, she becomes the target of very public aristocratic scorn. Her only choice is to flee London, vowing to start a new life far from the aristocracy. Unfortunately, the carriage in which she stows away isn’t saving her from ruin . . . it’s filled with it.
 Rogue’s Reign of Ravishment!
Kingscote, “King,” the Marquess of Eversley, has never met a woman he couldn’t charm, resulting in a reputation far worse than the truth, a general sense that he’s more pretty face than proper gentleman, and an irate summons home to the Scottish border. When King discovers stowaway Sophie, however, the journey becomes anything but boring.
 War? Or More?
He thinks she’s trying to trick him into marriage. She wouldn’t have him if he were the last man on earth. But carriages bring close quarters, dark secrets, and unbearable temptation, making opposites altogether too attractive . . .

Great North Road Map Reveal: Destinations and excerpts from novel:

Stop #7: “Lyne Castle”

Author Commentary:
The Country seat of the Dukes of Lyne, Lyne Castle is the childhood home of Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley, who left home at eighteen after a terrible tragedy and never returned. Summoned home by his ailing father, King finally returns--with the unexpected addition of Lady Sophie Talbot, irritating and somehow irresistible. The estate boasts one of the most complicated labyrinths in Britain...where King and Sophie find solace, and heartbreak, and each other.

--

Sophie would want love. She’d want it pure and unfettered, given freely, along with all its trappings. She’d want the marriage and children and happiness and prom- ise that came with it.

King could see it, the life she wanted. The line of little girls, blue-eyed and brown-haired, in love with books and strawberry tarts. For a moment, he imagined them smiling at him the way their mother did, filled with happiness and hope.

For a moment, he let himself believe he might be able to give it to her.

But she would want love, and he would never be able to give it.

He didn’t have it to give anymore. And those children, they would never be his.

He set her down on the edge of the fountain, coming to his knees, as though she was Ariadne and he the Minotaur, worshipping at her feet, adoring her even as he knew she could not survive in the labyrinth, and he could not survive beyond it.

“Tell me about last night,” he said softly, looking up at her, his hands at the hem of her skirts.

“What—” She caught her breath as his fingers explored the skin of her ankles. “What about it?”
“I hated it,” he said. “I hated stopping.”

She pressed her lips into a thin, straight line. “I hated that you stopped.”

His hands were beneath her skirts, pushing them back, farther and farther, up and over her knees. He pressed his lips to the inside of her knee, swirling his tongue there, loving the little gasp of surprised pleasure that came at the touch.

“I hate that I will have to stop today, as well."

Great North Road Map Reveal: Destinations and author annontations:

Stop #1:  "Sophie Stows Away" (English Country Estate near London)

Author Commentary:
There are moments in life when you know that you just can't go on without a change. Lady Sophie Talbot, the youngest of the infamous Talbot Sisters (darlings of the gossip rags and nicknamed the Dangerous Daughters) knows this is the case when she lands her odious, philandering brother in law backside-first in a fish pond at a major event of the London Season. And so, Sophie does what's necessary. “I simply need conveyance home,” she requests of Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley, notorious rake and her only chance of escape. Sophie's desperate, and in possession of the Marquess's boot, so she thinks she has a leg up, so to speak. King has other ideas.

Stop #2:  “The Carriage”

Author Commentary:
Lady Sophie Talbot, youngest and least interesting of the scandalous Talbot sisters (think 19th Century Kardashians) isn't so uninteresting once she's decided to stow away atop a carriage belonging to the Marquess of Eversley -- notorious rogue and her recent nemesis. Indeed, she cannot wait for the horrible man to discover that she's disguised herself as an outrider and stolen conveyance home to central London. There's just one problem...

Stop #3: “The Fox and the Falcon Posting Inn”

Author Commentary:
By the time Lady Sophie Talbot finds herself outside the Fox & Falcon Posting Inn, miles from her home in London, she's realized she's made a huge mistake. She only ever intended to hitch a ride home to Mayfair--and simultaneously stick it to the arrogant, handsome, horrible Marquess of Eversley, who happens to be minus a boot, thanks to Sophie. Suffice to say, things got out of hand. And now, dressed as a male servant in the drive of a roadside inn, things are about to get much much worse.

Stop #4: “Beware Highwaymen!”

Author Commentary:
Suffice to say, being on the road with an arrogant aristocrat is no fun at all, so Lady Sophie Talbot does what any self-respecting woman would do, she "borrows" his money, and gets herself on the next mail coach north. All seems fine -- until Highwaymen arrive, and that arrogant aristocrat arrives just in time to see her entire plan go pear-shaped.

Stop #5: “The Warbling Wren”

Author Commentary:
Being shot on the Great North Road isn't exactly a thing people expect to happen, and Lady Sophie Talbot finds herself in the rooms above The Warbling Wren pub, under the welcome care of a rather mad doctor and the watchful eye of the rather infuriating (and infuriatingly handsome) Kingscote, Marquess of Eversley. There are worse things, she supposes. Or are there? Not for King.

Stop #6: “Mossband”

Author Commentary:
Lady Sophie Talbot, youngest and least interesting of the infamous Talbot sisters, has decided that her best bet to escape London and the aristocratic life for which she'd never been intended is to take herself home -- to the small village on the Scottish border where she spent the first ten years of her life. And perhaps, after a disastrous journey north, something would go right, and her childhood friend Robbie, now the village baker, would make good on their silly youthful promises and marry her. Of course, Sophie isn't alone. She's saddled with the horrible, handsome Marquess of Eversley. Who has done everything to ruin her plans. Until now.

Giveaway, Excerpt, and Review of The Winter Laird (Mist of Fate #1) by Nancy Scanlon

The Winter Laird (Mists of Fate #1) by Nancy Scanlon
Releasing November 17, 2015

~ Official Blurb ~

THE PRESENT

Successful matchmaker Brianagh O’Rourke believes in happily-ever-afters...just not her own. She’s convinced passion only exists in her dreams. When she reluctantly accepts a marriage proposal, Bri decides she needs a vacation―but she didn't expect it to be in 13th century Ireland.

THE PAST

Laird Nioclas MacWilliam just wants peace for his clan. The time for him to marry has come, and after waiting years for his ally to present their daughter, he’s agreed to marry another. But on the eve of his nuptials, a daring rescue brings his missing betrothed right into his arms.

And she does not want to be there.

THE FUTURE

Brianagh has to return to the future. Nioclas has to marry. He offers a solution for the both of them: She marries him and stays for three months, and they work together to convince his clan they are a love match. In return, he vows to safely return her home. But as the days turn to weeks, they both begin to see what a happily-ever-after could be. And when the time comes, does Brianagh return to the life she’s built, or does she remain in the past for a chance at true love?

“The women are spying on us from under the benches,” Aidan said as he bounced on the balls of his feet, waiting for Nioclas to finish his drink. Admiring his sword, he added, “Been there for about ten minutes or so. I give them another twenty before they get cold and head back into the castle.”
Nioclas sighed. “I’m unsurprised. Does Erin still think no one knows about her forays into the lists?”
Aidan shrugged and quickly crossed swords with his brother. “Of course. I’m certainly not going to tell her. She’ll skewer me on the end of her sewing needle whilst I sleep.”
“Are you that afraid of a wee lass?” Nioclas mocked, jumping back and just avoiding the tip of Aidan’s blade. “I don’t think Donovan has much trouble with her.”
“Oh, I’m sure Donovan has complete control over his wife,” Aidan replied, and they both grinned as they hacked away at each other. “I don’t think he’s ever been privy to the full extent of Erin’s talents, though.”
Nioclas ducked and rolled out of Aidan’s path, springing back up and crossing blades once more. “I—oof—doubt he would’ve agreed to marry her, had he known.”
“Marriage. I don’t envy you, brother. Shackled for life. I hope she is worth it.” Aidan ducked, narrowly avoiding the at of Nioclas’s blade, then spun to avoid it again. “Saints, Nick, I was only—oof— is there something you care to talk about?” he asked sardonically as Nioclas’s attack intensified.
“No,” Nioclas replied curtly, swinging his arm relentlessly.
“Hmm. I believe there’s a tale there.” Aidan plunged his sword toward his brother, who leapt backward.
“None I care to tell you,” Nioclas replied, wiping the sweat off his forehead with the back of his hand.
“Well, you’re putting on quite a show for her.” They circled each other. “Mayhap this will be a love match yet—” Aidan’s sword went flying. He watched, open-mouthed, as it soared through the air. Someone called out, and men scattered as the blade went hilt-over-tip, landing about twenty feet from where they stood.
He looked at his brother in alarm. Nioclas had never bested him by forcing his sword from his hand. That was something they’d agreed long ago was unnecessary between them. War was never far, and neither wanted the other without his sword if it broke.
“Love is for fools,” Nioclas growled before stalking off.
It was a rare thing for Nioclas to lose his temper, especially in the lists. Bemused, Aidan watched him  go, then threw a wink over to the source of his brother’s obvious discomfort.
Smirking at the feminine gasps, Aidan collected his sword and sauntered off.

Brianagh O’Rourke was pretty happy with her plight in life. She owns her own company, which she created from scratch, and the matchmaking business is thriving. The only possible thing that was missing was someone to share it all with, but, ironically, Brianagh isn't sure marriage is in the cards for her. When her boyfriend of 6 months proposes and she says yes, she finds out something about her past that will change everything.

"It’s been said that once, a very long time ago, a curse was put on the O’Rourkes..."

Laird Nioclas MacWilliam's clan's survival depends on him forging an alliance with another clan through marriage. Years ago he agreed to marry the daughter of the Laird of clan O'Rourke, but no one has ever seen the lass. When negotiating all those years ago, he'd forgot to include a time frame for the marriage and has decided he's waited long enough and will marry another. When his betrothed finally makes an appearance, he needs to do some fancy footwork to keep her from abandoning him. For once the tables are turned on the handsome young laird as he finds himself in the unexpected position of persueer?
This was a fun debut time travel romance novel by Nancy Scanlon. I can't help but guess this one was inspired by Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. For years Brianagh O'Rourke has dreamed of a handsome young laird who makes her heart skip a beat. She's never met a man who can stir as much passion in her as her dream boyfriend does. Unfortunately, dreams are just dreams and while she longs to find a soulmate she knows dreams can't true. At least not the ones our minds conjure up for us in sleep. Pity that. When she gets engaged, however, her cousin tells her a fantastical story that she's out of her time. She thinks he jests until she finds herself in 1400's standing face to face with the man who has haunted her dreams for years. Now she finds herself in the middle of a clan war that she and the abilities she apparently possess are at the center of. The question is should she stay or should she go? More importantly, can she go?

I have to admit it took me a while to become attached to Brianagh, but she won me over by the end.
There was more to her than immediately meets the eye and we see her go from being out of her element to thriving in her new environment. I liked that even though Nioclas was the man of her dreams, she didn't instantly fall for him. He had to win her over.

Nioclas was a fun character who had to figure out how to win Brianagh over, something he never had to do with any other woman. Being a Laird and handsome, he is used to women fighting for his attention. When Brianagh shows up, he's not sure what to think of her, but quickly realizes her for the gem she is. She's not like the other women of his clan and keeps him on his toes.

Overall, I gave this one 3 1/2 out of 5 roses. It was fast paced with plenty of twists and turns to keep my attention. I kind of wish there'd been a prophecy instead of a curse/legacy associated with the brooch, but that's just my personal preference. I'm still not exactly sure what Brianagh's time traveling abilities are, but my guess is that later, in upcoming books. we'll learn the full extent of what she can do. Everyone seemed so afraid of doing something that would alter history that I surmise she has to come into and learn about her powers on her own. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a Fan rating--the temperature in the room seems to have suddenly gone up a couple of degrees and a fan would be nice. A lovely debut for Ms. Scanlon. I look forward to reading more of her books.
