To say Austin Hubbard has fallen on hard times would be an understatement. Months ago he'd been living the good life running his family business under his dad and ready to settle down with his girlfriend for the long haul. Then his grandfather had died leaving him the house his mother had grown up in and the land surrounding it. That's when everything went to hell in a handbasket. His father wanted the house and land for reason's Austin couldn't phantom. When Austin refused to sell it to him, he'd been cut off and, without funds, his girlfriend quickly abandoned him. He'd been devastated. Slowly, with the help of his friends, he'd managed to get back on his feet only to be knocked down once again by the betrayal of all betrayals he never saw coming.

Sonya Turner had been passed over for a promotion that by all accounts should have been hers. The promotion was the final step in her plan to becoming partner. The only thing lacking from her repertoire was she lacked that vital piece of male anatomy that would have gained her instant access to the good ole boys club, and there was no way she would be doing anything to change that--if that was even possible these days. So when her sister by choice, Roxy, asked for her assistance in helping her fiance's best friend get his newly inherited ranch sorted out, she'd turned in her resignation without a second thought. The sight that greeted her upon arrival, however, gave her pause for thought. A drunken cowboy passed out on the front porch was not what she'd been expecting. Not one to suffer fools gladly, she grabs a pitcher full of water and gives him the wake up call he so dearly needed.

While you can't always get what you want, Austin's about to get exactly what he needs...

This is the second book of the Wild Rose Ranch series and while you could possibly get away with reading this one as a standalone novel, I don't recommend it. The series is based on a group of four women--Roxy, Sonya, Adria, and Julia--who became a makeshift family due to their similar circumstances--they were all the children of women who worked at a high end brothel just outside of Las Vegas called the Wild Rose Ranch. Over the years they all endured endless scorn, ridicule, and torment due to their mothers' chosen profession. They're all around the same age, and it's their shared situation which made them all stick together and become the tight knit family they are today. Roxy, however, is the glue that binds them. Her story, Dirty Little Secret, is where we're first introduced to these Wild Rose riders, the name the four chose for themselves as they competed in rodeos.

The beginning of this book does not start off painting a picture full of double rainbows and unicorns. If anything, it paints a one the exact opposite--a harsh world filled with cruelty, unfairness, and a smattering of crudeness. Austin, when we're first introduced to him in this book, is not portrayed as a knight in shining armor or the dashing prince charming type. He's in a bad place and he's bitter, mad, and confused by the betrayals he's been dealt. As we start to gain a handle on the situation and come to understand how Austin managed to fall so far so fast, we begin to see more than just a spark of redeemable qualities. He is, as we all are, more than what he appears during his darkest moments.

Sonya is a no-nonsense, smart as a whip, beautiful young women who has hopes and dreams just like the next girl. While you'd think with all the lemons life has handed her she'd be a very cynical individual, she's mainly just a very guarded and cautious person about who she lets into her life. While her first impression of Austin isn't very high, as she works beside him and becomes acquainted with him, and he with her, she gets to know him in a way she wouldn't have otherwise. A mutual respect forms between them which quickly transforms into something more as they give in to their mutual attraction.

Sonya is a shrewd business woman and a forensic accountant by trade. She's been trained to find money, property, or whatever else people are trying to hide within the numbers, and she's very good at what she does. She's seen a lot over the years and has never been accused of wearing rose colored glasses or of being naive, and she is rarely intimidated. Very little surprises her and she doesn't play games, doesn't take crap from anyone, and calls 'em like she sees them. She's exactly what Austin needs and he's exactly what she needs.

The song that kept playing in my head as I read this one was Julia Andrew's song 'Something Good'...

'Perhaps I had a wicked childhood
Perhaps I had a miserable youth
But somewhere in my wicked, miserable past
There must have been a moment of truth

For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood

Overall, I gave this one 4 1/2 out of 5 roses. There were plenty of twists, turns, and heart wrenching moments. The story kept my attention, and maintained a good pace. I liked the dynamics of Austin and Sonya's relationship although it took me a while to warm up to Austin. I liked Sonya, however, from the moment she drenched Austin with water. She made me laugh and smile. We should all have a friend like her. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed.

Agent Dawson King has spent the last five months undercover in the state prison. His mission is to create a cover which will get him close to the daughter of Iceman, one of the deadliest lieutenants of the Guzman drug cartel. Agent Dawson has a score to settle with the man because he tricked the DEA into doing his dirty work. He set up a rival cartel's son to be murdered by the DEA for which Dawson pulled the trigger.

What the DEA has on Cara, Iceman's daughter, suggests she wants nothing to do with the man. From time to time, however, he shows up at her shop and that makes their dealings suspicious. She has a soft spot for ex-cons trying to get their lives back on track and that is what the DEA hopes to exploit. She owns a coffee shop called the Crossroad Cafe where she gives ex-cons  a chance to earn an honest wage while providing food and lodging too. Everything in the DEA's files seems to suggest she has nothing to to with her father's shady dealings, but if she does, this could be Dawson's (who uses the undercover guise of Chris Hickman aka Flash) chance to gain the knowledge he needs to put the lowlife and the cartel out of business. The only problem is Cara.

Cara has learned the hard way not to trust people. She gives her employees one chance, and if the blow it, that's it. There are no second chances. She shies away from relationships, and keeps mostly to herself. When Dawson, however, walks into her cafe she knows her reserve is about to be tested. The man is hardworking, sinfully handsome, and unlike any of the other ex-cons she's hosted. She's not quite sure what to do with him, but she knows what she'd like to.

Jennifer Ryan never disappoints and this is another fast-paced, high-stakes, action-packed, roller coaster ride of a read with plenty of twists and turns and characters that seem to leap to life off the pages all centered around a plot that keep you glued to the pages. It's the second book of the Montana Heat series, and I think this one might be my favorite book of hers yet. You could possibly read this one as a standalone, but I suggest you read the first book to find out how Trigger and Ashley came to be a couple, and how Scott fits into everything.

Cara is a complex character as is her dad. Their relationship is rather twisted and just as complex as they are. There is a backstory that we eventually become privy to. Cara has all but written off her dad, but can't seem to get rid of the man.While some might wonder why she doesn't up and leave, she has her reasons.

Dawson is in a hard position. He's falling for Cara, but he has a job to do. He knows Cara hates lies, but to blow his cover could have dire consequences and ruin his mission. I loves seeing these two fall for one another and seeing their relationship grow. Dawson's been warned not to start up anything romantically with Cara, but eventually he can't seem to resist her. Likewise, Cara fears a relationship, but there is just something about Dawson that draws her to him.

Overall, I gave this one 5 out of 5 roses. Action, drama, suspense, and romance--it's all in there--wrapped in a highly entertaining story that grabs's your attention right from the very beginning and doesn't let go. I absolutely adored it. If you haven't read one of Jennifer Ryan's books you're in for a treat. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. I definitely recommend this one.

But when Ashley Swan stumbles onto the property of a DEA agent in the middle of a snow storm severely under dressed with a young boy in tow the truth of what really happened begins to unfold. She did not walk away. She was kidnapped.

Now trying to reclaim her life with the help of Beck, she'll need to make sure the man who kidnapped her doesn't get away with it. For the man who took her has powerful friends in high places, and enough dirt on many others that getting charges to stick on him will be very difficult.

Escape to You is the first in the Montana Heat series and a spin-off from her Montana Men series. DEA Special Agents Caden and Beck "Trigger" Cooke first make an appearance in Stone Cold Cowboy. Caden's story can be found in the Montana Heat prequel novella, Protected by Love. This story, of course, contains Beck's.

This was a roller coaster ride of a read. There were twists and turns, highs and lows, and just when you thought you knew everything that was going on, another layer of the story is revealed. There is a lot going on in this one and it makes for a very addictive and suspenseful read.

Ashley is a very strong and brave young woman who feels like a shell of her former self. She'd been touted as one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Now she looks like she could play the starring role on The Walking Dead without any makeup. When she sees a means to escape from her captor, however, she doesn't hesitate to take the young boy who was held captive with her along. Considering she has to carry the boy a good portion of the way in her condition, that says a lot about her character.

Beck, just came off of an undercover assignment that went terribly wrong, and is in hiding from those he attempted to bring down. He's hoping to stay out of the spotlight, and when Ashley tells him her story, he realizes they need to be very careful how they handle things. Ashley is afraid the media will twist things on her and make her out to be the villain. If the charges against her kidnapper don't stick, she'll forever be looking over her shoulder wondering if he's out there somewhere planning to come after her once again.

I couldn't help but give this one 5 out of 5 roses. It had all the things I look for in a good romantic suspense novel. I loved the chemistry between the two main character, the drama of the situation, the suspense from not knowing if the kidnapper would be caught, and all the twists and turns Ms. Ryan threw in between. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a FAN rating--the temperature in the room seems to have suddenly gone up a couple of degrees and a fan would be nice. I highly recommend this one. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Take it from an old man, don't put things off. Time slips away so quickly, before you know it, it's gone."

Those were some of the lasts words of wisdom Wayne Traverse imparted to Luna Hill. He'd been encouraging her to talk to Colt Kendrick and fix thing with him. He silently predicted the two would be perfect for each other and, with what he was about to do, Luna could use a good man at her side. Over the years an unlikely friendship had developed between Wayne and Luna and they'd found they were two like minded individuals. He was always giving her fatherly advice and she'd enjoyed the time they spent together as well as his advice. It was a surprise, however, when upon his death he left the majority of his estate to Luna instead of his family, but he had his reasons. The will stipulated there was a way the family could earn back half of that estate, but they'd have to go through Luna to get it. Wayne may have known he'd open up a can of worms on Luna, but it's doubtful he realized it would quickly morph into a barrel of vipers. Luna's life was about to get complicated.

This was another great story by Jennifer Ryan. The position that Wayne puts Luna in was by no means ideal, but, interestingly enough, provided the perfect situation to test one's mettle. In this case, Colt stepped up to the plate. Talk about your accelerated courtships, this one definitely wins the prize. I was equal parts appalled and impressed by what Wayne did. His relatives showed just how low some people will stoop when they get mad about an inheritance that goes to someone they don't believe deserves it instead of them.

I felt so bad for Luna, but admit Wayne chose his successor well. Luna was more than generous when it came to dealing with Wayne's disappointed family. Wayne wanted the land he loved to go to someone who would love and tend to it as he would when he was gone. He found a kindred spirit in that regard with Luna. Thankfully for Luna when things got rough and a tab bit scary, Colt was there for her to lean on.

Overall, I gave this one 4 out of 5 roses. It had a high dose of suspense paired nicely with equally high dose of romance and embellished by a touch of mystery. I've actually begun reading 'Stone Cold Cowboy' to see if there were any sneak peeks into how this relationship began. While Luna and Colt have known each other for a while, she'd been his friend's girlfriend. It kind of brought to mind the 1981 song 'Jessie's Girl' by Rick Springfield...

They lived their lives in fear, and were more prepared than any boy or girl scout, though their preparations were for flight when circumstances called for it. As they grew and entered adulthood, one held on to the belief that all their dreams could come true while the other was more cynical and skeptical. Just when it seemed the one would get her happily-ever-after, it was taken from her. Grieving for the friend she'd promised to grow old with, the one left behind vowed vengeance on the person responsible. This is her story. Little did she know that in the midst of her grief, she'd find her own happily-ever-after.

One of the things I love about Jennifer's books is that they tend to go from low to high. They give you a sense that no matter what life throws at you, you can get through it. The main characters are strong females who never lose that strength even when their 'Prince Charming' enters the picture. The men in their lives respect and admire their independence and inner strength and don't try to infringe upon it, take over, or change them. They'll be their safety net and person to lean on when needed and know, if need be, their gal will reciprocate. By the end you get the sense the couple will make it through thick or thin. All that wrapped up in a fast paced suspenseful and dramatic story line that keeps you wondering how things will play out.

Almost from the beginning we see the signs that Kate and Ben are perfect for each other. Kate is a smart woman who is both tough and feminine at the same time. She grew up in the school of hard knocks, and took away from it a bit of street smarts and a desire to help others in similar situations. It's what led her into a career as a social worker. Ben didn't have an easy childhood either. He grew up with a desire to help woman in abusive relationships, like his mother, by becoming an attorney and founding a shelter called Haven House. What I found interesting about this couple is that they'd met before and even had a "moment" yet nothing had ever come from it. It took a situation where they truly got to know and depend on one another for them to act on what they'd both felt, but previously hadn't allowed themselves to.

I gave this one 4 1/2 out of 5 roses. This was a wonderful romance with a great big side of suspense added to the mix. I haven't read all of the previous books, but didn't feel lost at all. I will confess, however, I now want to read the others so don't be surprised if you see a lot of reviews in the near future for some of Jennifer's other books. On the Lisarenee Romance Rating this one gets a STEAM rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. I will confess that I'm not a big fan of cowboys, but Jennifer Ryan heats up the pages with her sexy suspenseful Montana Men, and has burned a place in my heart for this series. Montana Men is not your average romance series. It's a little more gritty and real to life with a whole lot of suspense mixed in. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future Ms. Ryan follows in the footsteps of Sandra Brown and jumps the genre boundary into thriller territory.

Dane Bowden, known as Great Dane on the rodeo circuit, is good-looking, charismatic, and sexy as all get-out. He's the type of guy who can walk into a bar and in thirty minutes have a woman in his bed. Only one woman has ever caught his attention, but she disappeared as mysteriously as she'd appeared years ago when he needed her most. Now that he's found her again, he's determined not to let her slip through his fingers a second time. The only problem is how can he convince her he's playing for keeps?

Bell is not your average woman. She's a certified genius who graduated from college at 18, medical school by 22, and is one of the best orthopedic surgeons around. She was raised knowing she was the dirty little secret in her family's closet and treated accordingly. She was the result of an affair between a married father and a fortune hunter beauty queen. She was literally the child no one wanted. Hidden away from the world by her grandmother, she's never learned how to fully interact with others. While she never forgot Dane and has followed his career over the years, she's determined not to end up like her mother--abandoned with a baby. From what she's observed, Dane has all the markings of being just as shallow as her father where women are concerned. How could she possibly take a chance on him?

Overall, I gave this one 4 1/2 out of 5 roses. It was smartly written, suspenseful, and tugged at my heart strings. I loved the way Dane was with Bell, but was a little surprised at how fast their relationship progressed toward the end. I would have loved for the story to have been expanded and gone a little more in-depth as to how Dane won Bell over. She didn't strike me as the type to fall so quickly, but Dane did dangle a very enticing package in front of her which contained the one thing she wanted most--a family. Granted Dane wasn't too shabby himself *grin* so I couldn't blame her for falling fast and hard.  On the Lisarenee Romance Rating Scale, this one earned a Steam rating--too hot for a fan, but you still have a handle on things. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. I loved the chemistry between these two.

Chapter One

One year ago…

Morgan’s fingers flew across the laptop keyboard propped on her knees. She took a deep breath, cleared her mind, and looked out past her pink-painted toes propped on the railing and across her yard to the densely wooded area at the edge of her property. Her mind’s eye found her guest winding his way through the trees. She still had time before Jack stepped out of the woods separating her land from his. She couldn’t wait to meet him.

Images, knowings, they just came to her. She’d accepted that part of herself a long time ago. As she got older, she’d learned to use her gift to seek out answers.

She finished her buy and sell orders and switched from her day trading page to check her psychic website and read the questions submitted by customers. She answered several quickly, letting the others settle in her mind until the answers came to her.

One stood out. The innocuous question about getting a job held an eerie vibe.

The familiar strange pulsation came over her. The world disappeared like a door slamming on reality. The images came to her like hammer blows, one right after the other, and she took the onslaught, knowing something important needed to be seen and understood.

An older woman lying in a bed, hooked up to a machine feeding her medication. Frail and ill, she had translucent skin and dark circles marring her pain-filled eyes. Her pain washed over Morgan like a tsunami. 

The woman yelled at someone, her face contorted into something mean and hateful. An unhappy woman – one who’d spent her whole life blaming others and trying to make them as miserable as her.

A pristine white pillow floating down, inciting panic, amplified to terror when it covered the woman’s face, her frail body swallowed by the sheets.

Morgan had an overwhelming feeling of suffocating.

The woman tried desperately to suck in a breath, but couldn’t. Unable to move her lethargic limbs, she lay terrified and helpless under his unyielding hands. Lights flashed on her closed eyelids.

Death came calling.

A man stood next to the bed holding the pillow like a shield. His mouth opened on a contorted, evil, hysterical laugh that rang in her ears and made her skin crawl. She squeezed her eyes closed to blot out his malevolent image and thoughts.

Murderer!

The word rang in her head as the terrifying emotions overtook her.

Morgan threw up a wall in her mind, blocking the onslaught of disturbing pictures and feelings. She took several deep breaths and concentrated on the white roses growing in profusion just below the porch railing. Their sweet fragrance filled the air. With every breath, she centered herself and found her inner calm, pushing out the anger and rage left over from the vision. Her body felt like a lead weight, and lightened as her energy came back. The drowsiness faded with each new breath. She’d be fine in a few minutes.

The man on horseback emerged from the trees, coming toward her home. Her guest had arrived.

Focused on the computer screen, she slowly and meticulously typed her answer to the man who had asked about a job and inadvertently opened himself up to telling her who he really was at the heart.

She replied simply.

You’ll get the job, but you can’t hide from what you did.

You need help. Turn yourself in to the police.

None of her personal information appeared on the website, and she’d put a lot of time and effort into keeping her identity and location a secret for reasons of her own. He’d never find her.

A chill ran over her, despite the warm sun on her skin.

She put through the charge and tried to erase the vision from her mind. She’d told him to go to the police. Nothing more she could do. She didn’t have any proof a crime had been committed. You couldn’t make accusations against people based on a vision. Even if she went to the police with what she knew, they wouldn’t take her seriously. She’d learned that the hard way.

The help she provided Tyler and the FBI was different. Her unique link with Tyler allowed her to assist him with some of his cases. Tyler had nothing to do with this man. She could ask him to investigate, but why would he? He had a hard enough time believing what she told him about the cases he was working on. She didn’t want to have to convince him all over again that what she saw was real and true. It hurt to have to convince him every time, despite the ample proof she’d given him on multiple cases. After all this time, he should believe her - believe in her.

She didn’t want to think about Tyler right now. He’d be in Colorado today. Close. Their connection that much stronger, and the harder he’d ignore it and push her away. Maybe she should give in and go see him.

Why couldn’t he stay in San Francisco?

It wasn’t time for them to meet again. She sighed and tried to put him out of her mind. Not possible. They were connected on an elemental level, and had been for a long time.

Why did things between them have to be so complicated and difficult?

Dealing with her customers was simple. They went to her website and clicked on the link to ask a question. She charged fifteen dollars for requests she answered. If she couldn’t answer the question, or wouldn’t answer, she didn’t charge and sent a standard reply, telling the person she couldn’t help.

Either the person believed in her enough to pay the fifteen dollars, or they didn’t.

Sure, they had to accept her Terms and Conditions. After all, what she “saw“ was open to interpretation and the result may not be what the customer expected. In short, if they didn’t like the answer, they couldn’t shoot the messenger.

She specifically informed customers to beware what they ask, and how they ask it. You may get the answer to a question you hadn’t intended.

If you suspected your spouse of cheating on you, don’t be surprised if she confirmed it, and that the other person is your best friend. She wouldn’t lie, or tell you only what you wanted to hear. 

In a few cases, she simply refused to answer. People often wanted to know when they were going to die and how. Her opinion, this kind of information did more harm than good. It usually altered the course of a person’s life, and she didn’t want to be responsible for changing one’s fate and destiny.

One thing she knew for certain, life had a pattern. Mistakes are repeated until the lesson is learned. Knowing something ahead of time didn’t necessarily mean you could change the outcome. Some things were meant to be and nothing could stop them from ending the same way she saw them, even if the path that led to that end took a detour first. That wasn’t to say the course of the future couldn’t be altered. It could. She’d done it several times. For Tyler’s family, she’d do it again.
